Ever since I was little, I’ve been terrified of dying. Now I know most people are, but this went beyond normal. I’d wake up in the middle of the night, crying from nightmares, and they only got worse when my mom was diagnosed with melanoma in 2000. My mom was 37 when she died. I don’t know if she wanted to see the world, but I can only imagine being married to a pilot there were places she wanted to see and things to do before her life ended.
When I was in middle school I started compiling a bucket list. I don’t want to die, but I know it’ll happen eventually. My goal is to feel like I’ve lived, like I’ve accomplished something. I think when I was a freshman in high school, or maybe even eighth grade, I borrowed my grandmother’s book 1,000 Places to See Before You Die. Before that, my bucket list was very basic: specific countries, or states, but that book became the foundation of what it is today. Granted this is a living document. That means I’m constantly adding things to it.
Currently there are 316 items on my list to see and do before I die. In a month that will probably double. I’m studying abroad to Dublin for four months starting in January and I’m in the process of in-depth research of Ireland, the UK, and mainland Europe. I want to get off the beaten path of tourism and explore. I want to taste authentic food, meet people and experience their language, dialect, and accents. Mainly, I want to immerse myself in every culture possible, and let people know what’s out there.
Come join me in my journey as I recount items I’ve already crossed off my bucket list, and follow my journey of wanderlusting the world.
